Did You Overdo It This Thanksgiving? You Got Nothin' on These Critters

Whatever your epicurean exploits were yesterday, you ain’t got nothin’ on the gluttony going on in the animal kingdom.

The day after Thanksgiving is America’s National Day of Bodily Shame, a time to reflect upon what we’ve done to ourselves. Hell, I’m impressed you’ve even made it to a computer or computerphone or what have you. More than likely I’m in the hospital right now.

Whatever your exploits were yesterday, I’d like you to take solace in the fact that you ain’t got nothin’ on the gluttony going on in the animal kingdom. A certain leech, for instance, feeds only on hippo rectums. And a spider mom dissolves and barfs up her insides for her young.

May I present to you the second annual Absurd Creature of the Week’s Critters That’ll Make You Feel Better About Everything You Did This Thanksgiving Weekend Save for That Thing You Said to Your Grandmother (here’s last year’s). Above you’ll find my very favorite eaters I’ve written about over the last year, and maybe they’ll be yours too. Not that you wrote about them—I did. I mean maybe you did. Whatever.

Anyway, check out the rest of the Absurd Creature of the Week collection here. As always, if you’ve got a suggestion for an animal for me to cover, I’m at matthew_simon@wired.com or on Twitter at @mrMattSimon.
