Thanks, I needed that!

Father in law is coming off life support tomorrow morning and probably won't last more than a couple hours.

Thanks to everyone for offering their condolences.  My wife's been at her father's bedside almost 24x7 for the past 2 weeks.  He had gallbladder surgery in January, and never really bounced back 100% from it.  He was home after recovering from that, and fell while trying to go pee, and her mom had to call 911.  The initial workup showed massive internal bleeding somewhere, as well as infection and sepsis.  His kidneys are already compromised, he's diabetic, has heart disease, asthma, smokes, doesn't watch what he eats, and has already had a heart attack and several small strokes.

He was helicoptered to a major Dallas hospital and moved to ICU where he was being given fluids, blood, antibiotics, and temporary dialysis, and was turning the corner the next day when he had a massive stroke that took out his entire left brain hemisphere, and stopped his heart twice.  The second time he coded, it took the crash team 10 minutes to get a steady pulse, and since then he's been completely on life support to maintain him.

The neurological prognosis is grim with almost zero chance of a meaningful recovery beyond being able to open his eyes briefly.  Even then, he doesn't track motion, and is unable to complete basic tasks like lift a finger (on his non-affected side) or respond to stimulus.  One test involved taking a wet washcloth and  touching his eyeball with it to see if he has even an involuntary reaction to it, and that was negative.

So, after a week of playing wait and see to give his shattered brain and other organs a chance to come back with any signs of a meaningful recovery, we are at the point now where it's time to take him off the vent and let nature take its course.

Sorry for the long threadjack/diatribe on this.. I've been playing a supporting role to my wife's family by shuttling other relatives to and from for their last visits, bringing in fresh snacks, clothing, and letting them go home to rest for a day here and there, and I'm glad I can do that for them during the darkest hours of their family life.
