The US spent years on Operation Plowshare but those pesky hippies and their not dying of radiation poisoning killed it.

Came in to point out Operation Plowshare, but I see whither_apophis has it covered

/Yeah, trying to market nuclear weapons as a good thing really didn't work out too well

"The raging gas inferno that could only be extinguished with a NUCLEAR BOMB: Footage shows how Soviet Union detonated nuke to put out blaze that had burned for three years"

That was actually pretty badass. I'm sure you could never drink the water in the area ever again, but who needs water when you have vodak?

Come on, the pan-atomic canal would have been awesome to see created.

This is the most scary nuclear explosion film ever, in my opinion of course. At first you think 1955 is bad. Then 1957 blows it away. Then 1958 is all wtf!

Who ever thought that making a reservoir with a nuke wouldn't result in contaminated water?

No, it's the atomic wallabies. Native to Australia, but thankfully rarer than red back spiders.

Got to stand by the crater of one of the "excavation" projects.
It really is pretty impressive. They wanted to dig canals that way. Except you know, the water would erode down to the glowy bits.

Not all of it. They were (and still are) a partner of ours right from the start in designing, building and testing atomic and nuclear weapons. They did a lot of testing right alongside us in Nevada and the south pacific. We shared the information and we both had observers there during almost all of the tests. Even today they use our Trident weapons systems and do their test launches on our test range off of Florida.

One of my favorite things I learned was the "Atomic Annie" project. The M65 Atomic Cannon, often called "Atomic Annie", was a towed artillery piece built by the United States and capable of firing a nuclear device. It was developed in the early 1950s and fielded by 1953 in the European and Korean theaters. It was tested on the 25 may, 1953, as a part of operation Upshot Knothole, codenamed Grable (for Gun).

We nuked the shiat out of earth and space and hell. well over 1,100 nukes were detonated by the US. Even blew up our own radios, military and bases a few times. Made a good chunk of the pacific and the southwest uninhabitable. It is extremely difficult to find any raw material not contaminated with some form of radiation from those tests. From steel to bananas to the ocean and atmosphere itself.

Every single person alive today shares in the radioactive ignorance of the US and USSR of the 1950's and 60's.

My grandpa was there!  He was the guy that measured the wind and stuff to aim the cannon. The only protection they have him was leaded goggles and a waist - deep trench to stand in.
