I wish we had missile defeat.  But we don't.  We used to have a State Department.  It was pretty good at keeping the peace.  But its gone now.

The button in question is used to designate incoming targets as hostile or friendly.

So is this "button" really a toggle switch?

No, one button for "friendly", one for "hostile".

This sounds like an HMI issue to me. If marking the track as friendly is going to cause the missile to explode in flight then maybe the system should ask for double or triple confirmation before it follows through.

Also, they allow the interceptor to be launched before an affiliation has been assigned to the track? Shoot first and ask questions later? I realize that they probably don't have a lot of time when deciding to shoot down an incoming missile, but that sounds kind of risky.

Anyway, I'm sure it's a lot more complicated than I know. I just wouldn't immediately blame the operator. I've seen some pretty horrendous UIs that while technically meeting the requirements, were hell on the users. The engineers would insist that training will paper over the issues, but one can imagine that in the heat of the moment mistakes will be more likely.

Never understood the logic of that scene.  If the other guy doesn't turn his key, and this guy shoots him, who turns the other key?

Also, having a gun in a sealed space where 2 guys have to spend 24+ hours together just seems like a bad idea.

Track was most certainly marked as hostile before
the shot. The sailor accidentally changed the assessment while missile was in-flight. The operators absolutely must have this ability and quick and easy access to it. Lots of reasons why a track can be misidentified initially. I'm betting someone is happy this was tested as the military doesn't usually like to spend millions to prove command destruct.

They aren't actually going to fire, it's meant to pressure them back into compliance.

Most likely the choice is made with software, so you don't have to redo an entire panel with a new missile.  You just reassign a switch (or button) with a new purpose.

What I'm wondering is how one determines an enemy from a friendly missile?  If you were a missile designer, wouldn't you try to replicate the flight profile of an enemy's missile in order to cause confusion?
