New Designers 2016: the freedom of youth celebrated by the design show dedicated to emerging talent...

There’s something about the freedom of youth that inspires great creativity. Bands rarely recreate the exuberance of their first record, artists are seldom as visceral as the moment they break through. Sure, designers frequently go on to greater things — but there is a thrill in the freshness of new designers, free from the shackles of expectation and business constraints.

New Designers 2016

Charles Dedman, One Year On

Pacing through the halls of any design show, I’m drawn to the students, the graduates, the young entrepreneurs; their work embodying a sense of revolutionary thinking, of reckless imagination. Gearing up for an impressive 31st edition, emerging design show New Designers may be well established, but that doesn’t mean to say it’s long in the tooth — quite the contrary, New Designers 2016 will showcase the works of over 3,000 of the year’s most talented graduate designers, and over 60 rising stars in One Year On, a self explanatory show-within-a-show at the London event.

The show that’s dedicated to young talent on the brink of making a name for themselves runs over the course of two four-day sections — Part One showcasing designers from arenas like fashion, costume design, jewellery, and ceramics; Part Two delivering new names in interiors, graphics and illustration, animation and motion. Rheanna Lingham, founder of Shoreditch design store Luna & Curious, returns to curate this year’s edition of One Year On, and is eagerly anticipating another helping of that freedom of youth: ‘this show really is a must-see for the sheer array of fantastic work,’ the designer expresses, ‘but also to hope that a morsel of the enthusiasm and excitement of these designers may rub off on us.’

New Designers 2016 Part One runs 29 June — 2 July, Part Two 6 — 9 July, at the Business Design Centre, Islington.
