2017 Impressive Games

After a slow start early in this console generation, the mid-2010s have proven themselves to be one of the greatest eras of innovation and technical prowess in the short history of video games. And 2017 has been a barn burner – outperforming even the rosiest expectations. New titles and massively improved iterations alike have been hitting hard one after the other. We'd like to take this opportunity to call out the very best tech we've seen in the last 12 months.

As in previous years, this list doesn't necessarily feature our favorite games. Heck, some of these titles are hard to recommend outside of the tech demo perspective. And it isn't just about raw pixel count or texture resolution either. Graphical fidelity is just one aspect of what can make a game impressive from a technical perspective. Be it an astonishing first-outing from a tiny dev team, a revolutionary new system, or an immaculate implementation of a clock-work world, there's a lot of praise to go around this year.
