Longines Avigation BigEye

Longines Avigation BigEye – Ref.: L2.816.4.53.2/4

The latest model in the Longines collection is a re-edition of pilot chronograph from the 1930’s that the brand has recently purchased for their museum. They regularly revisit the collection of the Longines watch museum in Saint-Imier to find new inspiration from the 185-year history of the brand with the winged hourglass.

Called the Avigation BigEye, it has a diameter of 41 mm, with big push buttons and crown, a semi-glossy black dial with bold Arabic numerals coated with SuperLuminova. The brushed case and the sand-blasted hands give a rather masculine look to the watch, while the large 30-minutes counter at 3 o’clock makes sure that the BigEye has a strong personality. I don’t have official numbers about the case thickness, but on forums, people mention 14 mm as the total height of the watch, which is understandable considering that it comes with a domed sapphire crystal.

It is powered by the ETA A08.L01, an automatic column wheel chronograph developed for Longines. With its 27 jewels, it beats at 28,800 vph and it has a power reserve of 54 hours.

Judging from these official pictures, the BigEye is quite an eye-catcher. While in Europe it is already available, Canadian authorized dealers will receive it in November and the official MSRP is CA$3,250.

As a graphic designer, I'm fascinated by the crossroads between technology and aesthetics. Horology is one of these crafts, where art and engineering come together to produce mechanical wonders that grace the eye. WatchPaper was born from the desire to create an online tool where I can share my passion for watches.
