Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Nintendo's Last Wii U Title

This news confirms what we already guessed about the Wii U's fate.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the last Nintendo-produced title to release on the Wii U. Reggie Fils-Aimé confirmed Breath of the Wild as the last first-party Wii U title in an interview with Polygon after the Nintendo Switch event last Friday.

“From a first-party standpoint, there's no new development coming after the launch of the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”

Although new Wii U titles won't be produced by Nintendo, there are no plans to dismantle the Wii U's eShop or online services. Wii U titles will continue to be sold at brick-and-mortar shops as well as on the eShop, and there will be ongoing support for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon.

Unfortunately, with the end of first-party development support for the Wii U, the fate of the console is sealed. Third-party support for Nintendo's console has been sporadic at best, and in the last year, Nintendo has been porting over successful Wii U franchises like Mario Maker, Hyrule Warriors, and Yoshi's Wooly World to Nintendo 3DS.

With the reveal of the Nintendo Switch console/handheld hybrid and the lagging sales and support for the Wii U, it was evident that the console only had a limited time before Nintendo pulled the plug on it. You can get the last first-party game for the Wii U, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, on March 3, 2017, when it launches alongside the Nintendo Switch.

If it was any other company I would say avoid it because the dropped support means no bug fixes (or delayed fixes).

But this is Nintendo so it isn't a bad deal if you are not interested in the Switch.

I'm going to play it on Wii U, and then later down the road probably replay it on the switch

Im going to attempt to rip the disc and play it on Cemu at 4k... failing that Wii U will do I guess. I really have a feeling that the switch and wii u versions will be nearly identical.

It's going to be pretty close I feel like, obviously higher rendered resolution on the Switch when docked but otherwise pretty much identical I feel like.

I guess there's still a chance an indie game or Ubisoft's Let's Dance 2017 still release on Wii U? Otherwise I think BotW will be the last Wii U game period.
